Letter from the Editor

February 19, 2021

Hello ACUA,

This will be my last letter to you all, as I will be serving as the Communications Committee Chair going forward. It has been my pleasure to be the Editor of the journal since September 2019 and the Deputy Editor before that. The journal was my first volunteer role in ACUA and I have enjoyed being a part of the team. I have seen the journal transform from a PDF publication to an exclusively online, easily shareable version. During my tenure, “ConnectFurther” features were created to enable members, who do not have the time to dedicate to writing a full article, to be able to share their knowledge and expertise in hot topics found throughout Connect ACUA. We also had several articles turn into Kick Starters and developed a consistent social media sharing timeline so that members can ‘like’ articles and share their feedback. The journal will continue to be an amazing resource under the guidance of the journal’s next editor; I look forward to reading and contributing to the journal and am excited to see what is next!

This issue of College and University Auditor has tips and resources to help enhance our role as internal auditors, while continuing to learn how to navigate the environment we still find ourselves in. In times like these, the need to extend our reach—as a helping hand or as a way to increase our knowledge—is paramount. Erin Egan provides tips on how to transform from the traditional role of ‘internal auditor’ to ‘investigator’ and Charlie Hrncir addresses the complexities and changes of Clery compliance. Another area that is ever-changing is technology and several of our authors share their insights within this realm. Tony Ollmann reviews how emerging technologies impact construction audits; Lynn Walker discusses Distributed Information Systems Management audit trends; and John O’Brien shares his expertise with higher education and technology, as well as his vision for what a collaboration between ACUA and EDUCAUSE could look like. Finally, as a way to collaborate and lend a helping hand, Hock-Chye Ong extended an invitation to ACUA members to join a new, global learning community for internal auditors—AuditWithoutWalls!

The content shared in College and University Auditor is only possible due to the contributions of knowledgeable professionals, like yourself. I encourage you to send your questions, suggestions, article submissions, and commentary to editor@ACUA.org. Enjoy this issue and thank you all for your positive responses and valuable contributions over the years.

Warm regards,

Marilyn
