Angela has 19 years of experience in internal auditing in the education and healthcare sectors, with a focus on IT. Her prior experience also includes 10 years in information technology (systems and network administration, and end user support) and 5 years as a paralegal with a large corporate law firm. She loves the opportunity for lifelong learning that working in audit, compliance and IT provides, as well as the innovative and collegial atmosphere at Wake Forest University. Her favorite things outside of work include time with grandkids, family and friends, dog walks and travel, and good food, music and books. 

Allen Brown

Allen is the former Assistant Legislative Auditor for Local Government Services for the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office. In this position he oversaw local government audits and directed the Investigative Audit group.  During his tenure with the Louisiana Legislative Auditor, he participated in hundreds of fraud investigations including one that resulted in the closing of a state agency.  Allen also spent eight years as CAE for the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.  During his career he also served as Gulf Coast Forensic Practice Leader for Deloitte and Touche directing fraud investigations in the US as well as in several foreign countries.  Allen is a faculty member of ACFE and has taught fraud investigation courses around the world.

Marion Candrea is the Chief Audit Executive at Ohio University, where she leads her team in providing audit, advisory, and investigative services at Ohio’s oldest public institution. Prior to joining OU, Marion worked at Rutgers University in its Audit and Advisory Services group. A firm believer in volunteering, Marion has been active in ACUA throughout all of her 13+ years in higher education, currently serving as a Board member-at-large. She is a graduate of The College of New Jersey with a degree in Accounting and is both a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). Outside of work and ACUA, Marion is the Board Treasurer for her local Boys and Girls Club and is a lover of running and the outdoors.

Christine has 17 years of educational institution accounting experience, including higher education sponsored research accounting and compliance.  Previously, she was the Assistant Director of Finance & Operations at Tilton School, Sponsored Programs Accounting Manager at the University of New Hampshire, and Senior Auditor at Grant Thornton.  She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting from the University of New Hampshire and a Master of Business Administration from Plymouth State University.

Trevor previously worked at Virginia’s Auditor of Public Accountants as a Senior Auditor and Information Security Specialist. Between Virginia Tech and the APA, he has over 11 years of audit experience. In addition, he has spent more than 20 years in corporate and non-profit management, accounting operations, information systems management and development, and consulting.

Sharon Kurek

Sharon is the Executive Director of Audit, Risk, and Compliance at Virginia Tech, serving as the university’s chief audit executive and reporting to the Compliance, Audit, and Risk Committee of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.  Sharon is an advisor and resource to senior leadership as it considers issues of controls, compliance, and risk across the university.  In addition to leading the internal audit function, Sharon has responsibility for facilitating and coordinating the university’s enterprise risk management and institutional compliance programs.   

Sharon received her MBA from Virginia Tech, bachelor’s degree in business administration (accounting) from Mercer University, and is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner.  Sharon has served as President of ACUA. 

Carlos Lobato

Since 2012, Carlos S. Lobato has served as New Mexico State University's Chief Privacy Officer and IT Compliance Officer. Carlos is responsible for ensuring IT systems, data and related activities comply with applicable regulatory requirements. He has extensive private sector, banking, local government and higher education technical, administrative and auditing experience and holds both auditing and technical IT certifications. Carlos has written various technical articles, which have been published by EDUCAUSE and the Association of College & University Auditors (ACUA).  Carlos has recently been promoted to Chief Information Security Officer to develop an institutional cyber security strategy.

Loretta Maguire, CPA is the Director of Internal Audit at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), Ewing, NJ. Loretta has 30 years of Internal Audit, Compliance and Enterprise Risk Management experience comprised of 15 years in healthcare and 15 years in higher education. She has performed and managed financial, operational, and compliance audits throughout the years and served as a Compliance Officer for 3 of her years in healthcare. Loretta has also facilitated the Enterprise Risk Management program at TCNJ since its inception in 2014. She is an active member of the Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA), the New Jersey Society of CPAs and the University Risk Management & Insurance Association (URIMA).

After leaving Deloitte, he spent 13 years at Vanderbilt University and Medical Centers where he served as an Assistant Director of Internal Audit and Associate Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Finance and Administration. He then served as Senior Institutional Audit Director at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for five years prior to joining the University of Alabama System.

Justin is the Director of Internal Audit at Virginia Tech.  Justin leads his staff in conducting compliance, operational, financial, and fraud reviews across the University’s enterprise.  Justin started his career with The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, continued his career at Southwest Airlines and Texas Tech University System, prior to joining the team at Virginia Tech.  Justin has served as ACUA’s President and is currently serving on the Nominating committee.  In addition to his board service, Justin is a member of the ACUA Faculty, has chaired ACUA’s NCAA Taskforce, previously led ACUA’s Distance Learning efforts, and is a frequent speaker.  Justin completed his Master of Architecture and Master of Business Administration from Texas Tech University.

Joselyn De La Cruz-Rameau’s professional experience has centered on computer programming, databases reporting, and analytics for both the higher education and the corporate sector. Joselyn is a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in Visual Basic Programming and Access. Joselyn earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, with a concentration of Management Information Systems from Florida International University, in Miami, Florida; a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems/Management and earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership with a specialization in Educational Technology. 

In Internal Audit, Joselyn has been involved in multiple audit projects where the use her knowledge of programming for script reviews, understanding of databases for query development, and analytics for visualizations were utilized. She is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), TACUA, San Antonio Power Bi User Group (SA-PUG), and the Lead for the Data Analytics Faculty group in ACUA. 

Tharanee Ravindran

Tharanee Ravindran joined The University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2004. She held numerous positions with the University prior to joining the University of Alabama System in 2010, and is currently the Director of the Office of Internal Audit in Huntsville.  Tharanee works primarily on projects in Huntsville but regularly collaborates with the audit team members in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.  

Tharanee is a graduate of The University of Alabama in Huntsville, earning a BS in Business Administration in 2002 and a Masters of Accountancy in 2004. She is a Certified Internal Auditor. She also holds the Certification in Control Self –Assessment and Certification in Risk Management Assurance credentials.

Joanna Rojas

Joanna Rojas leads the university audit team, which provides an independent viewpoint on governance, risk management and internal controls for the university, DUMAC and related entities. Joanna and the team conduct financial, operational, compliance and information technology risk -based audits. Joanna joined the Duke Office of Audit, Risk and Compliance in 2008. Joanna’s past experience includes auditing financial and information technology processes with PriceWaterhouse Coopers and Lowe’s Companies. Joanna holds a B.A. from Florida State University and an M.B.A. from Florida Gulf Coast University. She is an active member of the Association of College and University Auditors and Information Systems Audit and Controls Association and serves on the Duke University Federal Credit Union Supervisory Committee. 

Jennifer Romano

Jennifer is a senior consultant within the Risk Advisory Practice at Baker Tilly and has been with the firm since 2009. Jennifer serves clients mainly in the higher education industry as well as performing Sarbanes-Oxely risk assessments and testing for a number of other industries. As it relates to higher education, Jennifer is involved in performing risk assessments, assisting in the development of audit programs, performing consulting and advisory services as part of fieldwork, writing and presenting reports to process owners and leadership. Jennifer regularly attends seminars and conferences, publishes marketing material and presents at internal and external webinars. Jennifer is currently pursuing her Certified Internal Auditor certification through the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). 

Zuleikha Shakoor

Zuleikha Shakoor is the Senior Associate Director at UC San Francisco, an academic medical center.  With over 30 years of experience in internal auditing, her experience includes healthcare operations, research compliance, student services and financial and administration services. Zuleikha also leads the data analytics and continuous monitoring program within UCSF Audit & Advisory Services. 

Prior to joining UCSF, Zuleikha held the position of Audit Manager at a City Municipal Council in the UK. She holds a BSc in Economics and is a Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Fraud Examiner, Certification in HealthCare and is a member of the Chartered Certified Accountants (UK).

Chuck Smrt

Chuck is the President of TCG. He was employed by the NCAA Enforcement Staff for over 17 years. For many of those years, he was responsible for the overall coordination of the major infractions process and was involved in the decision-making process of whether to allege violations, including examining case precedent to determine whether the case was secondary or major. He has been present at over 100 hearings before the NCAA Committee on Infractions.In 1999, Chuck left the NCAA and started TCG. Since then, Chuck has been involved in providing conference and institutional assistance in reviewing information concerning possible violations and conducting compliance reviews. Since 2004, TCG has been responsible for the annual updating of the Division I Audit Guide. In 2007, TCG developed and has annually updated the Division II Audit Guide. Chuck received his undergraduate and master's degrees from Indiana University where he was a football student-athlete.

Laura Soileau is Director in P&N's Consulting Services Group. Laura has over 20 years of internal audit experience. Her practice area includes working with a variety of organizations on internal audit, internal controls, governance, risk, compliance and fraud-related matters.  

Laura has extensive experience in all aspects of internal audit, including working with audit committees; leading internal audits and internal controls assessments; facilitating risk assessments for financial, operational and technology audits; coordinating with external auditors; overseeing the execution of audit plans; and communicating with senior leadership and audit committees.  

Laura was named one of twenty "emerging Leaders" by The IIA in 2014.  Laura has also co-authored multiple articles for IA magazine and presents regularly on internal audit and fraud-related topics. Laura currently serves as Chairman of The IIA North American Board of Directors in addition to serving on The IIA's Global Board of Directors.

Matt also provides peer review services and training to institutional stakeholders and higher education audit professionals. Matt earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Angelo State University and is a Certified Internal Auditor.
