Trey  joined the FBI in 1995 and spent 22 years working criminal and national security matters.  Trey was certified by the FBI to provide instruction in interview and interrogation, and crisis/hostage negotiations.  Trey served as the Crisis Negotiation Coordinator for the San Antonio Division of the FBI for approximately 7 years.  Trey’s responsibilities at the UT System primarily involve assisting the UT System’s 14 institutions in conducting sensitive internal investigations and addressing the risks associated with foreign influence and research integrity.

Laura Buchhorn is the Assistant Audit Director at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Laura has managed various audit projects across UTSA and has collaborated with UTSA’s Research team on numerous audit and consulting projects including Uniform Guidance Compliance, Export Controls, Human Subjects Research, Lab Safety, Animal Research, and Payroll Certification/Effort Reporting.  Laura has co-coordinated the implementation of multiple modules within the Teammate Audit Management Software. Laura is actively involved with ACUA and currently serves as the Co-Director of the ACUA Risk Dictionary.  In 2016, Laura received the ACUA Member Excellence in Service Award for her role as the ACUA Midyear Conference Director. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a dual concentration in International Business and Accounting, and a Political Science minor, from Northeastern University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Public and Non-Profit Management from Boston University. Monika Cami, CPA, MBA - Monika is a Senior Auditor with the University of Michigan Audit Services team.  In her role, she is responsible for conducting compliance, operations, and financial audits, as well as consulting and special project engagements including fraud investigations.

Prior to joining the University of Michigan in June 2018, Monika worked for over eight years providing external and internal audit services to companies in various industries including manufacturing, tax services, local governments, non-for-profits and higher education.  Audit experience includes SEC filings, Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 attestations, and interim reviews (quarterly reviews).

She was with KPMG for five years where she provided professional audit services to a variety of companies in accordance with PCAOB requirements, U.S.GAAP, and GAAS. She led various audit engagements for companies in a variety of industries and was responsible for coaching, training, and mentoring new associates and interns.

Monika has a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting from the University of Tirana in Albania, an MBA and Master of Science in Accounting from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Peter Cataldo is the System-wide Associate Audit Director at the University of California – Office of the President (UCOP). UCOP is the system-wide headquarters of the University of California, located in Oakland, California. The UC System includes 10 campuses, 5 medical centers, a national laboratory, over 285,000 students and 227,000 faculty and staff. As the Associate Audit Director, Peter supports the UC systemwide audit program and works with the 10 campuses and medical centers on various system-wide compliance and audit projects.
 
Peter started his UC career as an auditor at the UC Berkeley campus, and has been a part of the UC internal audit program for the past 30 years. Peter earned his undergraduate business degree from Siena College in Loudonville, New York; and is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP), and a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA).

Lesia Ervin has served as the Director of Internal Audit at Mississippi State University since May 2011.  Prior to 2014, MSU’s IA primarily performed departmental Basic Control Assessments (BCA). However, in 2014, the scope of IA work shifted from BCAs to more process/operational audits. Later, in December 2016, MSU entered into an Information Technology (IT) Audit Co-Sourcing agreement with BKD. BKD and MSU IA completed the first IT risk assessment in October 2017. IT Audits then were incorporated into the Annual and 3-Year Audit Plans beginning FY 2018.  The changes to IA’s scope of work have allowed MSU IA to focus its limited resources on high risk and/or high impact auditable areas. BKD, consults on IT audit projects with identifying risks, developing audit programs, and designing audit tests, with MSU IA staff performing fieldwork, identifying control deficiencies, and drafting reports.

Matt Hicks is the System-wide Deputy Audit Officer for the University of California. In this role, Matt ensures overall execution of system-wide audit services, including effective resource deployment, professional development for UC audit staff, development and maintenance of methodologies and guidance, and monitoring and measurement of services. He oversees the annual system-wide risk assessment and internal audit plan development for the UC system and reports on internal activity, risk priorities, and results to the Regents Compliance and Audit Committee and system-wide leadership. Audit results have led to changes in Texas A&M University System policies and internal contorls in the areas of technology commerciliaztion, research compliance, strategic planning, risk management, health and safety, contract adminstration, information technology, and financial management.  He also served on the system-wide committee to consolidate research adminstration in 2011, served on the system-wide committee to address the federal Health Insuance Portability and Accountablity Act in 2003, and served on the system-wide committee to address federal time and effort reporting in 2007. 
 
Prior to joining System Internal Audit, Charlie served as a manager, supervising assistant auditor, and assistant state auditor at the Texas State Auditor’s Office.  He managed and/or supervised over 100 audits including one of this country’s largest financial audits of a governmental unit, the statewide financial and single audit of Texas.

Upon leaving public accounting, she worked as a controller in private industry for a few years before returning to audit.  She joined Vanderbilt University as an internal auditor in 2017.

Carolann Lazarus is the IT Audit Manager with the University at Buffalo, a research-intensive public university, part of the State University of New York.  She is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP) with over 20 years experience in IT Audit.  Her work in the Internal Audit department has focused on providing IT audit services in a collaborative environment in which she’s responsible for implementation and maintenance of a risk-based information technology review program using extensive knowledge of auditing principles, standards, techniques, and practices.  Much of her efforts over the last 15 years have been on compliance with the ever proliferating IT regulations, many of which require robust data security.

Susan M. (Sue) Menditto is NACUBO’s expert on accounting standards, financial accounting and reporting, and financial viability. She is charged with fulfilling higher education’s advocacy needs with the GASB, FASB, AICPA, and Department of Education. She has represented higher education on the Governmental Accounting Standards Advisory Council from 2006 – 2012 and on the AICPA’s Revenue Recognition Task Force from 2016 – 2017.

Ms. Menditto informs NACUBO’s research efforts on matters related to accounting issues in higher education, writes member communications, advisories and articles, and supports professional development needs by providing subject matter guidance. In this capacity, she has co-authored a chapter in a soon to be released book addressing the use of analytics in higher education. She also regularly speaks on accounting and financial management related topics at conferences.

Ms. Menditto began her career in public accounting, was the CFO for a not-for-profit organization, and as a vice president for Bank of America specialized in change management and accounting policy. She holds degrees in psychology and accounting and is a certified public accountant.

J. Michael “Mike” Peppers is Chief Audit Executive for The University of Texas System, one of the largest public university systems in the United States.

Over a 30-year career that began in public accounting, Peppers has led progressive internal audit activities at major not-for-profit organizations in higher education and health care.

Reflecting a lifelong commitment to serving the internal auditing profession, Peppers has held numerous volunteer board and leadership positions. He was on The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Executive Committee of the Global Board of Directors, having served as Global Chairman for 2017‑18. He also served on The IIA’s North American Board (2010-14, Chairman 2012-13), and International Internal Audit Standards Board (IIASB) (2006‑10). 

He served as ACUA President (2001-02) and received ACUA’s Outstanding Professional Contributions Award. In March 2019, Peppers was inducted into The IIA’s American Hall of Distinguished Audit Practitioners.

Gemma Rinefierd is the founding director of the Student Conduct Institute. Prior to becoming Director, Dr. Rinefierd worked in student affairs administration for more than fifteen years in New York and within the UK at a number of institutional types.  Rinefierd has held several administrative positions at various colleges and universities, including as a Director of Residence Life and Associate Proctor for Residence Conduct at the University of Essex and as a Director of Student Conduct within SUNY. Rinefierd earned her doctorate in higher educational leadership, with an additional certificate in Program Evaluation from the University of Rochester.   Rinefierd’s interests include student conduct, student development, residential life and housing, due process, title IX, sexual and interpersonal violence prevention and response, student leadership, behavioral assessment, professional leadership and public speaking.  In 2019 Rinefierd has presented at NASPA Region I, NASPA Region II ACPA, the SUNY and Department of the Navy Regional Discussion on Sexual Violence, Vermont Legal Issues in Higher Education Conference, CSPA of NYS, and regularly presents basic compliance training across New York and beyond.  Rinefierd has maintained active engagement in professional organizations and also serves on the Governor’s Youth Council for New York State.

Johnny, a retired United States Air Force veteran, has more than 30 years of information technology (IT) and information security experience.  He focuses on cybersecurity, IT audits, system security, policy, procedure, business continuity and disaster recovery assessments for financial institutions and institutions of higher learning. 
 
Before joining BKD, Johnny was senior engineer for a large IT company that managed a sizable international project for the Department of Defense.  He also served as the chief operating officer for a regional broadband development company where he directly managed all installation and IT personnel, as well as overseeing network security and product development.  Johnny also taught basic and advanced network design, network security and routing administration for Cisco Networking Academy at Arkansas State University.

Derek Sinutko is the Systemwide Principal Auditor for the University of California Office of the President (UCOP). In this role, he plans and performs audit and advisory services, communicates their results to management, and writes project reports. 
Derek has seven years of public sector audit experience, including both external and internal auditing. Prior to joining UCOP, he began his audit career with the California State Auditor, where he served as a staff auditor and later an ACL data analytics specialist. He earned a B.A. from California State University, Northridge and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara, both in political science, as well as a Master of Accounting from the University of Southern California. He is a member of ACUA and the Institute of Internal Auditors.

She served as President and board member of the Texas Association of College and University Auditors.  Honors include receiving service awards from both ACUA and the Dallas IIA.  She is an advisory board member for the UT Dallas Center for Internal Auditing Excellence, and for the past 17 years she has mentored internal audit students, providing them with actual audit experience.

Michelle (Mickey) Stevenson is associate vice president of research integrity at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is responsible for the overall management, coordination, and leadership in research ethics. More specifically, she and her team assist researchers in meeting the regulatory requirements associated with conducting research, such as human subjects protections, care and use of laboratory animals, conflicts of interest, export controls, responsible conduct of research, and biosafety. She also serves as the university’s Research Integrity Officer. Dr. Stevenson earned her B.A. in Psychology from North Carolina State University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Stevenson has also been designated as a certified compliance and ethics professional (CCEP) by the Compliance Certification Board.

Joseph Storch is an Associate Counsel in the SUNY Office of General Counsel and Chair of the Student Affairs Practice Group. He has testified before the United States Senate and regularly advises legislators and staff at the federal and state level on best practices in drafting and analyzing pending domestic and international campus violence prevention legislation. In 2014, Joe received the Commissioner's Award from the State University Police for contributions to safety on campus. In 2015, the National Association of College & University Attorneys awarded him its First Decade Award. Starting in 2016, he coordinated the SUNY's Got Your Back program which has donated well over 10,000 comfort bags to victims and survivors of violence. In 2017, the One Love Foundation recognized his work in relationship violence prevention with its Unsung Hero Award. Joe is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of SUNY Oswego where he served as Vice President of the Student Association, of the University at Albany with a Masters of Public Policy, and of Cornell Law School where he served as Moot Court Board Chancellor. After graduating, he clerked for the New York State Appellate Division, 3rd Department. He is the author of more than 50 articles and book chapters in law reviews, practitioner journals, and popular media, most centering around campus safety or copyright law.

Don an Audit Manager in the Office of the University Auditor at the State University of New York (SUNY), the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States with 64 college and university campuses serving nearly 1.3 million students in credit-bearing courses and programs, continuing education, and community outreach programs. Previously, he served as an Auditor at the New York State Office of the State Comptroller for two years. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Accounting from Siena College, Loudonville New York.
               
Don has been a member of ACUA for over 15 years and is currently a member of the ACUA Investment Committee, ACUA Governmental Affairs and External Relations Committee, and assist in managing the ACUA resource library. In addition, Don has been a presenter at ACUA’s annual conference multiple times; volunteered as a track coordinator and as a proctor at several annual conferences; and as a Mentor in ACUA’s Mentorship Program. In 2016 he co-authored an ACUA whitepaper entitled “Conducting an Internal Audit Risk Assessment – A Practical Guide for Internal Audit Departments of Higher Education Institutions.” Don has also been a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) for over 15 years and has been a presenter at Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Albany, NY Chapter conferences and seminars and at National Association for Educational Procurement Northeast Regional Conferences.

Goli Trump is the chief audit executive at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD.  Goli has over 25 years of experience in numerous industries. She has made compelling cases to ensure that audit has a seat at the table when discussing cybersecurity risks, and has developed a framework using students to perform audits in areas of cybersecurity controls. In 2019, Montgomery College was a victim of a national fraud scheme.  Her timely audit response was critical to reduce the reputational damage, advise the President, provide independent assurances regarding the post breach remediation, and to work collaboratively with law enforcement.

Goli holds an MBA, a CIA, and a CRMA. She is also a licensed trainer with The IIA’s CIA Learning System for the CIA Exam Preparation. Goli has published, presented, and provided training to other universities, national nonprofit agencies and the federal government on topics ranging from fraud prevention, enterprise risk management, compliance, and internal audit.

As Chief Audit Executive for the Texas Tech University System, Kim leads a department of 17 auditors in three cities.  The institutions of the Texas Tech System comprise an annual operating budget of $2.2 billion with almost 55,000 students.
A former ACUA President, Kim received ACUA’s Outstanding Professional Contributions award in 2014. Kim is Co-Chair of the Risk Dictionary subcommittee and received the 2011 Excellence in Service Award for her work in developing and maintaining the Risk Dictionary.  Kim served as a board member-at-large on the state board of the Texas Society of CPAs (TXCPA) and as founding president of High Plains Chapter of The IIA.
A member of ACUA Faculty, Kim is a frequent speaker for such organizations as ACUA, URMIA, TXCPA, and SCCE. Kim has also served on a number of peer review teams to enhance the performance of internal audit functions both inside and outside of higher education.

Bruce Weisman, CIA, CPA is the Associate Director for Audit, Risk & Compliance (ARC).  He joined ARC in January 2010.  Bruce is responsible for planning and performing audits of the university and overseeing the progress of the annual audit plan.  He works with the CAE and Assistant Director to manage a staff of six auditors. He graduated from the University of Evansville with a B.S. in Accounting and a B.S. in Business Administration and earned a M.B.A. from Lipscomb University.
